Help! Mould on my soil/compost!!
« on: September 07, 2008, 14:52 »
I have lots of different items on my windowsill, and when I checked them all this morning, they all appear to have mould on them!

The plant is a weeping fig, and is store bought, so that is their own soil/compost.

The Peppers I planted using growbag contents.

Same here, growbag contents. This is my propogator on the windowsill with all my seeds in and the lid on at all times.

Could be overwatering/damp atmosphere.  Beware, that could cause "dampening off"  where the base of the stem goes rotten.
Cheese makes everything better.

I would be more than a little concerned if it was damp atmosphere!

Overwatering maybe. I shall hold back on my watering then, but my Fig seems to drink all water I put in the saucer/pot stand, I was worried it wasn't getting enough.

The seedlings in the propogator was watered once, that was when I put the seeds in and all I did was mist them like it said on the packet.

They have not had any water since then (that was on the 5th).

The Fig is always watered from the bottom, I pour some water into the little tray the pot is sat in, and I only put a small amount in.

Riala, you'll need to quickly treat the surface mold before it can damage the seedlings and plant. Either use a commercial damp off spray (you add some to water to make a spray) or brew a pot of strong chamomile tea, let it cool, then spray the areas thoroughly. Chamomile is a good fungicide.

Figs don't need a great deal of water so go easy, and as the others say, bottom watering is better for seedlings.

If you're after the tea, just any old brand of chamomile tea will do. Use several bags in a teapot so it's a strong brew, dilute the cooled liquid a bit and spray several times over the next week. That should quickly control the surface problem.

If you want the commercial stuff, ask any garden shop personnel for damping off solution. Specific proportions are listed on the bottles; as it's a poisonous compound, take care that no children or pets are around when you spray, nor that they munch on sprayed plants. This product will instantly stop surface mold.

As the seedlings are all food, its best I just re-stock my Chamomile then.

Thank you so much for warning me of this problem, I shall get right onto it!
