Berry advice please
« on: July 06, 2008, 14:46 »
I've had my plot since March.  Now that the berries are ready I can see that I need to do something about them but I don't know what.

My plot is 9 metres wide and there are 3 rows of berries - autumn razzies, razzies ripe now and loganberries - all next to one another.  Apparently the guy before me had a bit of a market empire going on.

I did tie and trim the razzies when I got the plot.  Now they are all taller than me and the paths between them have disappeared.  I can't get to the fruit and loads of it isn't ripening and loads of it is wasted.

The fruit is delicious but I just don't need this much - I could buy and fill a new freezer just from what's ready today.

I'm going to have to streamline them a bit.  What would you advise?  I thought about taking loads out and making just one row, a third of each fruit but I don't know whether they move well.

Also, hiding in the rows is a redcurrant bush I can't reach.  Help!

Freeze it or make it in to jams, cheese, syrup jelly or wine. Marguerite pattern does a good book on all but wine
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

In the winter you can move them about.

If you want to lose some then it does not matter what fashion you harvest, cut some off to get at the rest and pick them in your deckchair.
