Spring onions
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:54 »
I sowed some spring onions a week ago, im just asking about the conditions they like when theyve germinated, can they sit in the modules for a while? And at what point do i plant them out, either into the ground or the greenhouse border?
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Once germinated, I let them grow on for a week or so in a cold greenhouse, then I put them in a sheltered spot for another week or so.

By this time, it's April and in the ground they go. Keep them in the modules until then.

I'm still waiting for mine to pop through.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine get sown straight out, last year in the cold they were fine so i don't expect any hassle this year from them....

Jamie's using my method of giving a few a head start.

The bulk of mine are direct sown.

Every year I'm disappointed in my spring onions. They grow all right, but they grow into something that's nothing like the shape of spring onions you buy in the shops. I get a small white onion bulb with a thin green stem attached to it, no real thickening of the stem at all. Anybody know why?

Nope  ::)  Consider yourself lucky, I don't even get that much!  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Like Rhysdad, have already planted an experimental packet. For 39 pence its got to be worth a gamble down here in 'the tropics'...

my module tray of spring onions got moved out to the greenhouse today, getting on for 100% germination in multipurp indoors........when I struggle to get them growing outside.
I think I will do them all like this  :)
