A brick is 9" long, add 1/2" for mortar so there is a start.  What kind of bond are you thinking of, how many courses?  I think a chat to a brickie is called for.

But let me give you a bit of advice, ensure you have a course of bricks 'on edge',  I mean with holes horizontal to ensure maximum airflow through the green house.  It is 'stale or stagnant' air that causes most problems.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

An 8X6 base is 28' in total length, a modern brick is usually about 8.5 inches, which is therefore about 8.75 inches including the mortar joint, so the total per course would be 28 X 12 / 8.75 = 39 (per course of bricks.)

Best to have a few spare though.  ;)

My greenhouse is my first and was only installed last autumn, so I'm obviously no expert, but I've tried to make the structure as "sealed" as possible, my thinking being that you have complete control of the temperature and humidity via the door/s and window/s. I would also think that a course of bricks with holes in would let in all sorts of unwanted beasties (possibly including mice if you used the 3-hole version!)

Hopefully there will be more views on this to follow............  :)

I would go for building blocks as appose to your normal house brick as they are a bit bigger and will give you a better footing for your structure. I found when i built my 8 x 10 greenhouse that if i layed a course of blocks on their side i was able to get more height in the eves (i am 6'2" and need that extra bit space).

It is very easy to do and even easier if you have a friend that is willing to help with the job. ;)

Thanks for your replies.

Lee, did you put a course on its side and then another course on top stood up?

First of all i marked my foundations out with 4 string lines. (the string lines were on the inside if the block in the picture) Once i was happy with this i dug my trenches out (i dug them around 18", a little too deep!!) and put some ballast in the bottom to a depth of 12", for this i used smashed up paving stones and bricks that were lying around the site, this was all compacted down in the trenches.

Once i done this i poored cement into the trenches and levelled it off with a board on edge (it doesn't have to be dead level as you can do that with the mortar you use for course of blocks).

I cemented all the blocks in position on their side ensuring at each stage that it was level and square. And finally i pointed up

Hope all of this makes sense
Lee

Blocks far easier to drill and fix into without splitting the brick/block edges when you come to fix the base down
