Groats?
« on: September 26, 2012, 12:12 »
Well I'd never heard of them but the breeder I bought my new budgies from says his birds love them and gave me a jar full.

I've tried to buy "groats" locally without luck so far.  :(

Has anyone else heard of groats?

I'm looking for a supplier.

I thought a groat was a form of medieval currency, about four old pence I believe! :D

Cheers,    Tony.

Crushed grain such as barley, buckwheat or oats - try Amazon.

Or, a very old type of currency.

Example - LINK. If you know what the stuff looks like you can probably get it in a grain store (if such a thing still exists ), or Holland and Barrett or similar...

We always fed our budgies groats and got a small container from the same area you'd find budgie supplies. They are hulled grains, usually oats for budgies, but can be other grains. Groats are a source of high energy for the birds but you don't feed it to them all the time or you'd have them hanging upside down in the cage and flapping like mad. Kind of like kids on too much sugar. Just a bit maybe once or twice a week is fine.

Health food stores will carry nice clean groats in small quantities as a sack would likely walk off on its own before the birds could eat it.

There's a bit more info HERE.

Here we go, used to get my bird food from them,

http://www.haiths.com/Products/Groats-CAST01014/

It's an oat with the hush removed but not rolled or crushed.    :)

Thanks for all the of the replies everyone.  :)

I used Haiths 40 years ago - pleased to see they are still around. Problem is their prices are dearer for ordinary budgie seed mixes and they charge delivery on orders under £50.

It'd take my 6 budgies a long time to plough through £50 worth. I had just a few kilos in mind.

None of the local pet shops or pet food supplies have a clue what I'm talking about when I ask for groats. I think, on the phone today, one store thought I wanted a goat!

Off on my holidays very soon so I'll keep an eye out when I visit every pet shop I see while OH goes in all the charity shops  ::)

Kleftiwallah ....

Don't you use silver groats where you are?
60 are worth a pound.
Perhaps you're on that new fangled dessimelly coinage?
 ;)

We used to feed our cockatiel on groats and hemp, from the pet shop  :)  I assumed you could still get it there

These days the big-chain pet stores only stock things in pretty packets and they seem to have no idea what groats are at all.  ::)

Our local pet stores won't get any in as there's no demand.
Apart from me.

Have you checked out health food stores? They should carry small quantities.

We still have proper pet shops hereabouts so I suppose we're lucky   The fishing tackle shop might be able to help as fishermen use it for bait mixture

Thanks Trillium - that's my aim this week-end once I've visited the remaining pet shops in the next couple of towns along the coast.  :) I intend not to come home without some.

Thanks for the link - appreciated. The groats shown on the web-site look ideal... good price too. I've sent off an email to see what quality they are....whether suitable for feeding to pets.

Again....... thanks for taking the time.  :)
