greenhouse floor advice.
« on: October 15, 2007, 22:28 »
Hello there  :D

Wondering what to do with the floor of the greenhouse.  I would like to have a row of thin slabs up the middle of it so I can tend eitherside,,, ie soil, manure mix so I can put stuff directly into the ground. Is this a good idea? There are tressles to go in so I couldnt use them with this method, maybe one if I just do one side?

Maybe it is better to have a hard floor and grow stuff in pots/bags etc.

What do you folks do and what works best. I will be using it for seedlings and tomato plants etc..

thanks!

My greenhouse is all slabbed and I grow in big pots (don't like growbags).

Easy to clean amd sterilise and no need to change the soil (except in the pots   )

What about a slab middle and chippings? Easy to wash chippings down too.

(can you tell I only have enough slabs for the middle?     )

Chippings give more room for bugs to lurk.  the more you can have as washable surface the better IMO.

PS: £25 - nice bargain!

One of your biggest problems in a greenhouse is pests and diseases.  The fewer places to lurk the better.  I think you'll need some of Munty's Jayes Fluid on your chips

Right, After much deliberation (staring into space) I think slabs all over is the best course of action.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  :D  :D  :D

I'm a bit of both!!!

2 of my greenhouses have slabs through the middle and i plant either side and at the end.  I try not to grow the same thing in each 2 years running, and each year I change a bit of soil and replace with some of my own compost.

Then the third one is slabbed down middle, with stone chippings one side and bark the other, as its all I had at the time!!!!  And they get washed when I wash the greenhouse down with Jeyes each year.  This one is used for sowing seeds and potting on, then I grow a few things in pots.
