Pre 1965 Mountfield M1 tiller
« on: August 24, 2007, 18:22 »
Hi everyone, can anyone help us.

We have a pre 1965 Mountfield M1 Tiller, but we do not know what the engine is.

It looks very like the one in the photo that Taildragon posted on the 14th June 2007. (taildragons second post of the one from e-bay)

Except that on ours, the petrol tank sits at the back of the engine and between the engine and the handlebars.

There is only 1 lever on the handlebars which controls the throttle.

Also between the handlebars there is a pull up/push down lever, which moves the engine back and forth to engage the pulley wheel which has a two belts.

Will get a photo and post it as soon as I can, to see if anyone can help.

is the engine white?
is the petrol tank plastic?
if answer is yes to both, it's a fair bet your engine is an ASPERA.

if thats the case.......oh dear.

Aspera

Hi gwiz, have been offline for the last week, thank you and bigbadfrankie for your replies.

Yes the engine is white, and the petrol tank is plastic, gwiz, why 'oh dear' surely it can't be that bad.

The engine does run on full throttle, but it won't idle.

The carb works fine, my son put it on his rotovator and it fired up first time, the spark plug is working ok.

The only problem we had was with the flywheel, which was broke so it was welded.

Could this be out of alignment and so be the problem?

If this is so, where could we get one from, any ideas.

Here are the pictures of the rotovator.

you have the tecumseh version of the aspera engine. parts will be a bit scarce, but not impossible to get hold of.
i dont think that the welded flywheel will be a problem at all, providing its keyed onto the crankshaft in the right place, which it sounds like it is, otherwise it would not run at all.
you have either a governer fault, a blocked jet on the carb, buggered points/condensor set or a buggered engine.
max engine rpm should be no more than 3000. you MUST make sure you have a full pint of oil in the crankcase. the reason there aren't too many of these around now, is because if they are run low on oil, they will throw the connecting rod through the side of the crankcase = new engine. hell, they sometimes do it even if they DO have the right amount of oil in it.
i would really try to obtain another engine if you can.
points are found under the flywheel don't loose the flywheel key when you take it off!
good luck, if you need some help on the phone with it, pm me with your number, and i will be glad to help if i can.

new engine

Hi folks, just thought I would let you know that we decided to replaced the engine.

With a brand new Tecumseh 3.5hp, (which was a good buy)

Gave the handles and rotovator body a good clean and a re-spray.

It works like a dream and looks virtually brand new.

So thankyou for all your advice.
