Successful adoption... I think!
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:36 »
Yesterday, I chucked the last of Rosies eggs away (and one of the *exploded* on impact *very sick* ).  She had done such a good job of sitting (apart from 1 squashed egg at the beginning, and one squashed egg at the end) That I bought 3 one day old black layers chicks for her.

She wasn't impressed at first and puffed up and growled at them, but she didn't complain when they buried under her feathers :)

I checked on them a half hour later, and all three were bimbling around the coop, so I stuffed them under her feathers again, and after another half hour everything was fine.

This morning she was brooding them without any problems, and she was very hissy and growly at me when I opened the coop for her.

I'm hoping that by tonight things will have settled down properly, adn that she will be a proper mum to them :D

The adoption itself went fine.  Unfortunately I lost two of the chicks fairly early on due to a weasel.  But the third chick grew up and was a nice little layer :)
