This is a helpful video for pruning tomatoes
http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-prune-tomatoes

although I pinch out side shoots as soon as I see them growing, rather than wait til they're quite big  ;)

I wait until they're about 6" long.

Then I can have more plants by rooting them!  :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Tomatoes are either bush type (determinate) or cordon (indeterminate) - bush types are not normally pinched out but may need "stopping" if they are a bit late and therefore at risk of producing too many fruit to ripen before the cold gets to them.

(Most tomatoes are cordons but it's worth knowing for sure so you treat yours appropriately.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I do that occasionally.  The side shoots root really easily usually.  So if a plant dies on you and you need to fill the gap.......   ;) ;)
