Title: Cheap polytunnel, how much to pay
Post by: sheridal on March 19, 2009, 09:43
I teach at a school that has a farm, and they have an old polytunnel (hoops and polythene) that we can have. We offered £100 for it, but the farm manager has said that it is too much. The polythene is coming from another (larger) polytunnel that is damaged. They would have to pay to have the polythene removed, so she doesn't want to charge for that. The hoops are old, but still in reasonable condition, she has said a couple of quid per hoop. How much would hoops usually cost? We were going to have 5 hoops and I think they are either 10/12 ft wide.

I don't want to rip off the school farm, so how much would people suggest to pay for it/each hoop?

There are some of the pipes that go into the ground as well, but not sure on how many there are.

Thanks in advance
Louisa

How about offering the money as a donation rather than as actual payment for the items.  :)

That is a good point, but not sure it would make that much difference.

Does anyone know how much it costs for new or second hand hoops??

here's a price list for spare parts
http://www.nurserybitz.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Polytunnel_Parts_16.html (http://www.nurserybitz.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Polytunnel_Parts_16.html)

But IMO parts are always more expensive than a complete kit.
I would look at prices for complete tunnel and work your way down from there
6ft7 x 14ft9 - 2nd hand  £225 on e-bay if thats any help :)

We offered £100 for it, but the farm manager has said that it is too much.

Tell her to sue you for being generous and pay what you're obviously happy with ;)

Thanks for the info, we have now been and collected it, have ended up getting 7 hoops, as the other two would just have gone to waste, and at least this way if we want to expand, then we will be able to. I measured them and they are the same as a 13ft tunnel that is erected (measure wider than this when loose) Also, the polythene has come off in one undamaged piece, so really chuffed with that.

We still haven't decided what to pay for them. I had seen the website attached but as that is for larger tunnel I wondered if anyone had a better idea for smaller frames. Thanks anyway
