Super fast celariac germination?
« on: March 27, 2015, 07:40 »
I sowed some celeriac seeds yesterday evening using a new bag of Verve seed compost.

They have been indoors overnight.  This morning there are two seedlings poking through the soil!

Is this normal?

Not in my, albeit limited, experience!  My celeriac seeds in the heated propagator are just starting to poke through after about a week!

Celeriac has a reputation as being very erratic in its germination. My seed from last year is proving this, so I have just sent for some new seed.

I would say, not normal. There may have been something in the compost already perhaps.

I always put my seeds on top of the compost, do not cover the seed and put in the heated propagator. Usually takes 1-2 weeks to come up.

I do mine in February in case something goes awry, and to give them an early start so they grow larger.

Some seed packets say cover them and some say leave them uncovered. The time I covered them none germinated. Touch wood I haven't had that problem.

All mine have been pricked out and potted up in little paper pots.

Last years crop was pretty good.

I wondered if it could be a stray seed in the compost. When it's leaves show better I can hopefully identify.

I followed the packet instructions and covered the seeds. They are a brand new packet of Thompson & Morgan seeds.

I'm worried that I've left my seed sowing a little late but I don't have a greenhouse and limited space at home so thought I'd wait and sow what I can directly outdoors when it warms up.

I hope it isn't too late, I only put mine in last week.  For info: they took 7 days to germinate with heat and lightly covered.

I'm preparing myself to be amazed! Never had Celeriac germinate in less than a week or 10 days.

Update on the demon seed.  One seedling had no leaves and has withered away.  The other hasn't really changed and looks like it will go the way of the other one.

I will try to upload a photo before it dies.

Looks too vigorous a "type" to be Celeriac? (Looks more like Sycamore to me)  So might be a weed, and the Celeriac is yet to germinate?

That's way too big to be celeriac. Its seed are very small and the cotyledons reflect that.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So in conclusion - no it's not normal and a random seed has made it into my compost.  Very confusing for a newbie. Thanks for the input everyone.
