I normally plant cuttings just as the leaves drop when i am tidying up the fig tree. Push a 4" length of last years growth into a pot of topsoil leaving just a half inch  with a bud above the surface,
Do not expect any signs of activity till late spring but normally 90% will grow if left outdoors even after a cold snowy winter.
Figs are doing well this year picked the first dozen yesterday. :)

I am having good results with my two fig trees even after the mystery fig thief few months back which stripped one of them bare, but it has come back like nothing happened and loaded with many figs again.

I will take your advice and hope to have 5 more trees next year.
