I like to reward/bribe all my animals on occasion, but the chicks are the fussiest of the lot!
Has anyone any advice on what their chooks love, and also, the big no no when it comes to chook treats.
My ex bats have all pretty much grown back their feathers, and think they deserve a big thankyou for the unrelenting egg laying throughout Christmas!

Greatest bribe I have found, apart from corn, is grapes - the nearly take my fingers off! Just cut them up a little first as a whole grape is enormous in their beaks!
-
Yep Grapes and Mealworms, Cherry Tomatoes, Sweet corn and the occasional King Prawn alway cause a riot. :D
-
Mealworms, Grapes, Cherry Toms, Sweet Corn but not tried Prawn yet
-
one of mine dives into to a banana like theres no tomorrow! Dried mealworms went down really really well today
-
Oh yep they go mental for King Prawns. Hillfooter gave his Smoked Salmon at Christmas and his loved that too.
-
grapes, boiled carrots, worms and rabbit food! :D
-
It's King Prawns for the girls treat tomorrow

Oh rabbit food. Mine head straight for the hutches first thing every morning and at rabbit feedin time I cant move for chickens. Have to give them some to get rid of them. Grass is always greener eh? :D

My ex bat runs out the run, strqight up the garden path, leps up 4 steps , through the dog flap and heads for the dog food in the kitchen. Poor dog if she happens to be eating because Tuffy just dives in beside her!!
The dog food is the dried stuff called Hi-Life

ohh ohh I remember something! In the summer I was standing by the back soor eating a plum. Well, I took 1 bite and my Maran flew at me and made me drop it!! She then ran off with it- making noises like she was very pleased with herself >:( >:(

Individual hens have different favourite foods one of mine will risk death to get to a tomato another hen prefers cucumber.
Again live mealworms are the top treat.

As far as hens are concerned stolen food is the best you can get. :D

Thankyou all! Greens are a total no no. Corn on the cob they love, grapes the love along with meal worms. Out cat sitter was feeding them the left over cat food whilst we were on holiday and they love it!
Tomorrow is big chook house clean...
-
patsa they love it. What's wrong with greens? I gave mine cabbage leaves most days.

Pasta can cause sour crop problems (it killed one of my hens) so is now off the chooks menu.
Cabbage leaves are fine raw or cooked.
-
Water melon. Try it! They wont leave it until its all gone!!!
-
Mine seem to enjoy their morning plate of left-over porridge. During the fruiting season they also love gooseberries and raspberries. There was an excess of Gooseberries this year and they were getting so many I swear there were gooseberry flavoured eggs...
-
My lucky ladies get dried meal worms or brocoli or peas or spinach gave grapes once but I like them to much so I eat all the grapes now. I prefer to treat with greens than anything else as it makes me think my eggs are better :tongue2:
-
Plums, apples, blackberrys they will eat the lot as soon as they are getting ripe. Its a race to see who gets there first.
-
I gave mine mealworms today and t :)hey loved them, will get some rabbit food too .
-
If the wild birds are any guide, plums will be a favourite - we haven't had a single plum this year because the birds got to them first!

I am planning to be reincarnated as a chicken at Hillfooter's place. Smoked salmon for hens! Do the sparrows get caviar?

That's the only food my wee Pom will eat. Have never tried giving it to the chicks though. Think the dog would be really put out. She hates them getting sweet corn cos they don't let her have any. Poor bullied wee thing :(
