Title: just lost fav hen
Post by: iowrooster on August 21, 2009, 15:39
Just got home from walking my brothers dog and noticed our little white girl ,Tegen, wasn`t with the other hens. I found Tegen at the back of the run, her leg had been tangled in electric fence, and was obviously broken. Remember reading a post on here about a poorly hen and members persuading the owner to put the hen out of its misery, so I knew what I had to do.  It was so hard to do this to what had become my favourite bird, I even spend time thinking about her when I`m at work.  For the last 6 weeks we had come to believe that Tegen was a little , shall we say, special.  She would miss food when pecking and  have funny five mins where she would leap in the air and run around , scare the other two girls and then carry on as if nothing had happened.  She was so friendly and happy in her own little world.  The thought of her suffering is unbearable, and was made harder by the fight she put up when i had to do the deed.  Now wondering what if this happens again with the other two- who do stay away from the fence. We had brought electric fencing to protect our girls, and have tried as hard as possible to give them a good home. Oh just suggested I could have taken her to a vet, but leg was at such an angle,it was the best thing to do?

Hey, thanks.  Is a horrible sickly feeling . Worried about the other two girls, they don`t seem concerned that she`s not there though.

A lot of people bury their pets in their garden.  If you have children, it would be nice to have a "gentle" little burial ceremony.  It introduces them to animals dying in a kindly way,.

I'm so very sorry, how heartbreaking  :(

My pets are always buried in the garden - as colliebird says, it can give a little comfort.

My thoughts are with you, so sorry  :(

Thanks for your replies. Will talk with oh this eve.  Just concerned now that it could happen again.
She was prone to running about in little tantrums, can only guess this is what happened. When I freed her leg she even seemed glad to see me, but the leg was pointing to the sky :(

Oh dear  :(

You did the best thing !

You're quite right - it is not legal to bury chickens in the garden.  You can bury cats, dogs, horses, even humans (with the correct paperwork) but the authorities in their wisdom say no to chickens as they are farm/food animals  ::)

Guess how I dispose of mine  ;)

It's good the other two haven't reacted to her not being there. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Good luck!

Oh that is very sad, like you said doing your best to protect your hens :(
As for not being allowed to bury chickens  It appears I have broken the law on a number of occasions

I am so sorry, it is very, very tough having to cull birds, I always cry. It isvery, very  rare to lose a bird due to electric fencing, the only consolation I can offer is that you are likely to lose a lot more to the fox if it wasnt in place, I know we would have had our stock decimated!
Again, so very sorry, however I applaud your bravery at doing the right thing.

So sorry to hear about your hen, having lost two in the last 6 months and with another sick one (which we may have to 'help') I really do sympathise.  Hope you are OK.

Thinking of you - it's hard to lose any pet.  Amazing how they manage to get under your skin, isn't it?  I'm sure there's nothing I can say that will make you feel any better - only time will heal - but I am sure that everyone on here is thinking of you and sympathising.

Well done with doing what had to be done as well - it was very brave and I know I would have just panicked and fussed and not actually done anything useful so good on you.

I would give her a nice burial in the garden and stuff the bureaucracy.

well said Amanda!

I lost a very special pekin boy some time ago, so buried him in a stand of silver birches (favourite scratching area) with some large broken flagstones on top, now when I am there I dont cry, but smile at the lovely memories the little fella gave us all. :)

How lovely to get so much support from this web site - I'm sure it will have helped at such a difficult time...we too have one that seems a bit special and she's also our favourite so I read your email with slightly moist eyes I must admit!!  Well done for taking a really hard decison, I'm sure we will all have to broach this at some time.
Thinking of you...
Cattin

hey thanks again for all your replies. really does help.  Went to a poultry show today and saw her double!!! Cattinj , spoke to a friend today who had a goose that was little on the special side too, he said she was his favourite.  As for the deed itself, think that you know deep inside it has to be done, also remembering others experiences on here helps

sorry you had to do the deed on a favourite, i had to take mine to the vet, could not bring myself to do it, but realise how very hard it is to finally take the plunge and yes, they do get under your skin, even if it is " only a chicken ".
lost 2 favourites recently.

just look forward to replacing her.
