As an allotment holder since 1969 I know find it increasingly difficult bending down to remove weeds from between plants.
However I understand there are products available called "Selective Weed killers" and "pre-emergent" weed killers.
Presumably pre-emergent weed killers will prevent weeds actually occurring whilst presumably selective weed killers will kill weeds around existing plants without harming the plants themselves.
I wish to know if anyone has any experience in using either or both of these products and what range of plants are unaffected with a selective weedkiller and what products are most effective at a reasonable price.

Also any other helpful information on this subject would be most appreciated.

The only selective weed killer I'm aware of is the one used on lawns. It kills broadleaved weeds but not the grass.

Pre emergent weedkillers only work for as long as the surface layer is undisturbed - so planting or harvesting would stop them working........ and I really would fancy eating something grown in a bed drenched with weedkiller to be honest. 

Can you not just hoe the weeds off and leave them on the surface to rot - so-called chop and drop mulching?
