Is my Garlic ready?
« on: April 12, 2009, 21:10 »
This is my first time growing Garlic and all appears to be going quite well!

I've been out and about in the garden today and noticed that the leaves are turning a little yellow as are some of the stems.

The variety is Early Purple Wight, planted on 17th Ocotober last year...

Should I lift one up?

Noooooooooooo Garlic isn't ready until at least late June/July.  A few of the bottom leaves always die off but do wait until the Summer when the 'whole' plant turns yellow and falls over.

No Weaver, it's not ready yet; few more weeks, around July, when the foliage has all died off and gone crispy yellow. Looking good, though  :)

Like you Weaver I'm growing garlic for the first time this year, and like you I'm seeing yellowing of the lower leaves. I'm glad I read this thread now :)

Mine's looking the same - working on the assumption that it'll be ready some time after the summer solstice.

What you can do is snap off the central flower stems as you see them forming. They won't hurt the plant if left, and are good in stir fries, but they rob the bulb of growing strength so if you want large bulbs, snap them off. You can also side dress the bulbs now with some compost or rotted manure and a bit of water if its been dry lately.

I read somewhere on t'interweb that yellowing leaves was a sign of nitrogen deficiency, so I gave mine a splash last week and it certainly seems to have perked them up :D

Hi Jolly Jen. I had the same problem to download photos but found a small program called Pix resizer that you can download for free from the web. Try to google it to found out more.

Any suggestions where to obtain said Nitrogen?!

I have over 180 garlics, so am picking some early. Mine picked yesterday look just like yours, you can see the bulb at the bottom is just starting to widen but they are far from ready yet.

Epsom salts watered in can pick up alliums, if you think they need a perk, as can seaweed.
