Potato help please!
« on: April 23, 2010, 13:06 »
Hi all

I'm looking at growing some potatoes to bake.  I have looked through a number of sites but wanted to ask your advice on which type you feel is going to be the best to grow for this purpose.  I have never grown potatoes before, so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks  :)

Louise

Baking spuds:
Get in second earlys now, maybe, Maris Peer, Saxon or Cosmos.
Or Main crop - Maris Piper, King Edward or Romano.

Stand by for a wide range of individual preferences as the choice of spuds available is huge. Try having a look at the "tater base" to aid your selection. Here

Last year I tried various types, of my soil will be different but I found that Picasso was the best. It produced the biggest spud with the best flavour in a blind tasting, also produced a lot of tubers. The only down side was it also had slug damage, but this is my baker by choice now.
