Annual weeds you can compost but perennials need to be very dead before you compost them.
The red onions are they overwintering ? if not I think it will be to late this year.

I compost everything and not has a problem with perennial weeds. I am however completely overrun with tomato seedling everywhere that I used the compost   so probably better ignoring me and listening to Rich.

And if someone could tell me why they are growing so much better than the ones I actually planted, I'd love to know

Glad it's not just me. Maybe next year I should just fill a tub with compost from the bin and leave them to it. The Toms seem far happier that way and not bother with all these rules for propagation!

Back in the spring I broke off a piece of carnation by mistake.  I shoved it in a pot full of our own compost,  hey presto!  7 very healthy tomato plants and the cutting took too!  Wish I could make everthing grow like that!

Spread the contents of our Dalek over the garden last year and had the best tomatoes, potatoes and pumpkins ever (kept us going all winter).  I sometimes wonder why we do it all properly and just don't leave it to nature.

I've got some lovely Desiree spuds in my roses     Just the thing I needed when I was short of spuds for tea the other day. All courtesy of home made compo  :D

Speaking of red onions, my lotty mate told me not to plant the sets until May as I was moaning that all my Autumn planted ones had bolted. So going to try that next year
