Courgette Leaf Problem
« on: April 20, 2012, 13:35 »
Hi,
I am new here and new to vegetable growing so am hoping some of you experts can help! I am growing courgettes in pots ready to plant out but I am having some problem with the first true leaf getting sunken spots and dying. All other leaves seem to be ok at the moment but I'm worried it could spread Does anyone know what might be causing this.......

Is it something i should be worried about and is there anything i can do to stop it?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

could that be sun scorch? did the leaves have drops of water on them at some point?

Possibly, they sit near the window in a room that gets a lot of sun, I'm quite careful to not get water on the leaves though.

What's your rough location and when do you intend putting them out?

You dare not do so until all danger of frost is past and that's another month at least where I am. In the meantime, they could well get weak & leggy in your house. In fact dare I suggest the stem already looks a bit like that?

I've only just sown mine in the greenhouse.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Looks overwatered and or suffering cold at some point. The sun scorch thing about watering in hot sunlight is unproven.

I can see what you mean, they are quite tall but they are starting to bush up a bit, I think the picture is badly taken. I'm in london and bar a freak hailstorm last week its been pretty good weather, no frost at all since february (garden is well protected). Will harden them off this week and put them out if that is best.

I think I'll stick with my RHS encyclopaedia of gardening, which in several different locations cautions specifically against allowing water onto leaves in sunshine in order to prevent sun scorch.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well I removed the leaf and it doesn't seem to have spread however the plants lost a few leaves to  high winds yesterday (my own fault for forgetting to bring them in).

One other question, both varieties of courgette plant are starting to bud, should i let these grow or should i remove them as it seems quite early. If i remove the buds will it stimulate leaf growth?

You remove nothing from a courgette plant, until it's as big as you want it.

Mine are now snug in their pots, but still as seed!

Mine are snug in their packets - except for an 'early sowing experimental one' in the greenhouse under a thick polybag at night  :nowink:

Mine would be, were it not for the fact I was going away and then have other things on when I come back.

They'll be fine in the greenhouse and tender car of my daughter.  :nowink: :nowink:

Mine are snug in their packets -

Same here, its early yet and unseasonably cold with snow at both ends of the British isles.
