Apples!
« on: August 27, 2006, 15:16 »
Yes I'm back again asking for advice! The apples in the abandoned orchard are nearly ready. I was thinking about cider (yum!) but I'm not exactly sure if it's possible to do this at home. Getting the juice out of enough to make a good quantity seems almost impossible, any ideas? I don't expect to be able to use all of them there must be tonnes! I do have a juicer but it really is soooo small scale it's untrue!
Is it possible to make 'apple wine'?
Regards to all,
Denise

I edited in this next link as I put it in my wine recipes thread and didn't want to clog up the forum with samey threads but some lovely simple recipes here and a great website.

We have just bought afruit press from Vigo in Devon after much debate because it is not cheap,£160 for a 9L press. We have been all systems go since getting it,apple juice in the freezer and to drink fresh, and the kitchen is being populated by demijohns of cider to be(the green house is also a nice warm fermenting place). As I said not cheap but as a joint Chrissy presie last year being used each day at the moment.

The OH is still at it, boxes of apples in the kitchen and the compost bins smell like a brewery,if the rats find the pulped, fermenting apple we`re in trouble.

Apples seem to have done really this year, despite the drought. She made 10 jars of apple jam on Monday. A 'Mrs Beeton' recipe. the jam set really well and He says it tastes fantastic!
She also made a batch of pear and apple jam with the remains of the apples. Very nice, but the pear did not go mushy like the apples. He says it 'tastes OK' .  :?
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.
