Chayotes
« on: November 19, 2024, 18:01 »
Our neighbour kindly gave us some of the chayotes she grew in her garden. Never heard of them before. Does anybody else grow them? How can we preserve a few of the vegetables to sow them next year? Any advice on this subject would be most  appreciated.

I occasionally see them for sale as produce where I am, but usually labelled as chow chow or Christophene and always imported from overseas.

Not sure they are considered a crop you can succeed with in the UK

Thanks for your reply. Our neighbour (a Chinese lady, grows them quite successfully in her garden, apparently. The proof is she had a surplus to give to us. She grows them outside in her garden and the temperature here in Belgium is generally higher than in the UK, so after tasting the plants (delicious), I fancied trying my luck next year.
