brassica salad crops and rotation?
« on: July 25, 2009, 08:39 »
I'm confused about where to put some salad/baby leaf crops since I have seen them classified as brassicas and one book says they need to be rotated as that.  But most books seem to ignore the fact that they're brassicas entirely and say edge a bed with them or sow in a 'salad' bed.  So, is that one book being too cautious?

Trouble is, if I treat them as brassicas I'm really restricted because I've already got way too many brassica beds on the go and will probably have to go without some year or another at this rate.  But if I put them any old place should I be worried when I plant proper brassicas there later?

I'm talking about things like land cress, orach, mizuna, winter purslane for starters.

Thanks
Clover

Of the ones you mention only mizuna is a brassica, though rocket is too if you intend to grow that.  Mizuna is very fast growing.  I reckon you could sow some between slower growing brassicas and have it all used up before the sprouts/ cabbages/whatever needs the space.

Cheers,

Gillie
