Has anybody had any disappointing results when using B+Q seed compost. After years of  using the same brand of seed compost I decided to give B+As a try. The resulting seedlings grew spindly and the leaves all had a reddish tint, any similar experiences anyone?

i'm tight and just use b&q verve MP compost for everything, including seeds.

i'm assuming the main contents are the same with a few tweaks to make one better for sowing, i would say i MP is ok then there shouldn't be a prob with the seed compost.

Their compost looks and smells like most composts used to do, has very few twigs and virtually no nasties in it, so I won't use anything else. Hopefully the kudos they got from Which? as being a best-seller will make them think twice before altering it.

I just opened a new bag of Verve MPC and it's poo compared to the last lot I had.  Nowhere near the same stuff or as good a quality!!!

We have some verve and some local glastonbury stuff called violet I think.  too dark to go and look but its 13 pound for three large bags and came on recommendation from the old boys on site.

i used this last year and it was awful. didn't hold any moisture and had very poor germination. changed to verve and had about 10 times the amount of seeds germinate. plants seemed to grow very slowly compared to verve, personally i would avoid.

Yes i learnt from the poundland stuff,2 more 125l verve bags from b&q tomorrow  not had any problems with it

I think you get what you pay for. My view is to buy the best compost available for the seedlings, that will get them off to a good start, then use cheaper stuff when you need the bulk in pots and suchlike so I'm afraid is Arthur Bowers and Clover for me for the seeds/seedlings.

I bought Verve MPC for the first time last week. It looks pretty good to me. No twiggy bits or mould. I have used Arthur Bowers before but was put off last year as it was full of mould and very twiggy. I guess it varies with each batch though.

Yes Headgardener22, I normally use clover compost for my seeds and seedlings and I think I will stick to it.

We do stock New Horizon peat free at the association shop too, and its use is definitely increasing, but it's too coarse for seeds and Clover is lovely (albeit containing peat).
