Too early/cold to put tomatoes outside
« on: April 17, 2013, 14:19 »
I have Gardener's Delight at the four true leaf stage and Tumbling Tom - yet to show true leaves but coming on.

I had planned to pot the GD on and grow in larger pots in my unheated plastic greenhouse (zip-up type) and put my Tumbling Tom into hanging baskets.

It is getting milder now and I wonder if it is time to get the plastic greenhouse out again and introduce my GD toms gradually to living in there - would have to tether the g'house down as the winds are still high down here.

My Tumbling Toms would have to be ok living outdoors in their hanging baskets but they will be a couple of weeks growing indoors yet.

Any thoughts?

I know I won't be doing that until next month at the earliest in my part of the world. Even in the southwest, the mean April nigh time temp is too low for toms.

Some of my toms are a foot high now and still in the dining room.  Yesterday I put my min/max thermometer in the polytunnel where they will be going and the overnight temp was only 3C, so they will be here a little while yet.

If you put your rough location in your profile Kirpi, some people more local may be able to give you better info.

I got 4C on mine what does it need to get up to?

I potted my seedling on from the propogator a week ago.  Their coming on lovely.  However, it was really warm and sunny here on Wed and so I put them out for a bit of fresh air.  Like I say it was warm and sunny but a tad windy.  Talk about sulking :)

Had to bring them back in after a short time.  They weren't happy.

I also have Gardeners Delight toms on the go. I pricked them out about 3 weeks ago and planted into small pots (plastic cup from vending machine). They have gone mad about 20cms high with plenty of leaves and the roots have nearly filled the pot.

I keep them in the house by the sunniest window but let the out for some air on Sunday. Far too windy here to put out so I think I will move to garage to get them used to the colder temp.

I dont have a lot of success with Toms, this is my best attempt so far. So please can some one give me some advice as to what I do next as it would be a shame to lose them now as they look so healthy.

Have you used the aluminium foil trick? You don't want them growing too fast due to lack of light. The garage may be too cold overnight and too dark for them.

Are they destined for a greenhouse or outdoors. If it's the latter you may be a bit early with them. I won't contemplate planting them outside for another month, if not 6 weeks, yet.
