Dahlias
« on: June 12, 2010, 15:01 »
My Dahlias are shooting now so happy with that except for two of the five.  They really do grow fast don't they.  Only put them in soil a week or two ago.  Thing is gotta move them to a pot, a blue tesco mushroom box (the big ones their supplys come in not the little consumer ones) doesn't look that attractive.

They are about 6 inches tall.

Will they mind being moved?

At this stage and time of yearr can I take cuttings?

Sheila, they don`t like being disturbed, but if you have to move them so be it. Make sure you give them a good watering the night before. As for cuttings, yes, you can take them now, but do it before you move them. :D

ok thanks.
I might be able to hide the tub behind the planters and not move them at all, I'll have a think.

No need to disturb them, just bury them in the pot they're in.

Pot your cuttings into more attractive pots :|

Oh thats a good idea Yabba.  Although its suck thin plastic that I could probably break it away quite easily without too much disturbance.

We've grown plants in 4" pots before now ( guarantees they make tuber ) so I'm *pretty* sure you don't need to cut the plastic ;)

Also pretty sure you could just dig a big hole, dump the plant out of its container and slap it in the big hole .... it would *really* appreciate a drink after that, but it'll live ;)

Personally I'd go the "dump it out" route as it's already a tuber ;)

You can still take cuttings after you've planted it, you'll just need to bend down further :tongue2:
