Controlling bush tomatoes
« on: June 29, 2011, 21:57 »
Hi all

this year as well as cordon toms (which I'm fairly confident with)  I'm growing some bush varieties (Legend and Roma)...I hadn't actually realised this when I was planting them out so as they're growing strongly they're getting a bit close together. Any tips on controlling them, like which bits to snip/snap off without affecting yields too much?

I prefer to let each plant have only 3 stems and tie each of those to a cane, (rather like a cordon) and pinch the extra shoots out.
Otherwise just put some canes around each plant, or along either side of the rows and string twine from cane to cane to hold them up, and just leave them to it.
They get very heavy with fruit, if the weather's good ;)

Last year I had a bed full of bush tomatoes and I just made a cane frame round the outside of the bed and left the plants alone. They supported each other very well, with a bit of help from the cane frame. They gave me a huge crop.

thanks peeps...I'll know better for next year and will have one side of ghouse with bush and the other with cordon to make it easier to manage...for now I'll make something to loosely support the bush ones and keep them from attacking my Shirleys
