I suggest you buy a 25kg of bag of hydrated lime from a builders merchant, and spread that over your grass. Shouldn't cost you more than a tenner.
Is this a job for spring or should I do it now?

Any time of the year I think, but benefits may be lost by washing out of the lime by winter rains, as the gass won't grow to out compete the moss over the winter.

Alan, one reason for the moss is probably because of the underlying cobbles which won't permit full drainage in this wettest of summers.  So, suggestions to lift and relay won't solve that underlying problem.

I agree with the mosskiller and subsequent action.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, lifting and re-laying are out on grounds of cost too. Not sure of current turf costs but 4000 square feet won't be just a few bob. This weekend is forecast mild and dry-ish so I'll start tomorrow with the ferrous sulphate treatment

Well the marathon nears completion. Total area has been treated with ferrous sulphate solution, left a couple of days and then really butchered with the petrol-engined scarifier. A quite amazing amount of thatch and moss removed (lawn-mower on high setting picked it all up but took three passes).  Three large compost bays plus Council garden waste wheelie-bin filled to the top and lawn looking very sad with black patches where the ferrous sulphate is still working on the moss. Believe it or not, I'm now praying for rain to get the grass growing again following which I'll selectively scarify the black patches again and then apply lime in early spring.

Thanks for all the advice
