Tomatoes have flowers on.... What next?
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:19 »
I can't believe that some of the tomatoes that I have been growing in the cold greenhouse have flowers on already. I've only just planted them into their final place in the gremhouse as i have been worried about frosts, but can't holdback any longer as they are tall and with flowers. Do I start to feed them now or keep them comfy for a few days to settle then begin to feed?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

You don't feed until the first fruit has "set" - that is when you can see your first small tomato.

Feeding too soon can encourage leaf, rather than fruit development.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am in a similar position having planted mine in their final place last week. I will feed mine with liquid feed in a couple of weeks, and they are looking good at the moment, flowers are opening out in this lovely weather!   :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

So you start to feed them as soon as the first tiny green tomato has come though and not when the whole truss has set?  If this is the case I had better start feeding!

You don't feed until the first fruit has "set" - that is when you can see your first small tomato.

Wish I knew the secret. My tomato plants are late getting up OR they've got a hangover and they can't get out of bed.

Which tomato plants are you growing.

Is nettle tea ok for feeding tomatoes?

I've always thought nettle tea for leafy growth and comfrey tea for fruit growth. Maybe someone could confirm this?
