Tylan 200 .... important!!
« on: November 09, 2010, 19:45 »
I have just spent £8 on a prescription..... £28 on the drug and now have had a call from the manufacturer to say that 'under no circumstances can it  be injected into a bird as it will cause significant muscle damage and cannot be given orally as it will not be absorbed by the gut'!!!

So where do I stand then..... I asked the vet if I could have this as I have read that it can be used....and was given  a prescription.... but if the manufacturer says the above  then no way will I try it!!!

For goodness sake..... I dont know what to do.... No way am I paying all that money for something that wasnt suitable in the first place  >:(

It's not licenced for poultry and much of the information I googled for seems to be against it.

Why did you ask the vet for it ?  Do you have a problem with sick hens

It may just be a matter of it not being licences so the manufacturers are being protective of themselves.

Hi Aunt Sally.... I have a bunch of pekins that have not responded to baytril or tylan soluble.... they have myco :(

I really dont want to cull them, but know that it would be sensible :(

I spoke to a well recognised avian vet and he suggested it to me.... but the call I had from the Dr at the manufacturers sounded positive that it should NOT be used :(

Just at the end of my tether as to what to use now :(

I was told that the tylan sol would work but that the hens may not be drinking enough for it to be effective..... so I thought that if I was not man enough to inject that I could shoot it down orally.....hense the call to the manufacturers :(

The manufacturers HAVE to tell you not to use it as it is not licenced for poultry.

Vets use many things that are not licensed for poultry but they generally tell you that it's not lienced and you have to agree to its use.

Can't you go back to the avian vet who recommended it ?

Yes... I will ring him in the morning.... I am hoping I can still use it as cant see that it can be sent back to the internet site that I have bought it from.... :(

I am also out of ideas for these birds.... they are not sick enough to kill but just dont seem to respond to the normal stuff..... i know they will always be carriers and it will go through to the eggs etc but  :(  I like them

I am sure my vet would have said if it was a deffo no no...  but no one is infallable :(

I know quite a few have injected tylan (not sure it is the same strength as yours) and they swear by it. Fingers crossed for you and your pekins tomorrow xx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thats what made me think it would be a good option..... people seem to think it helps the hens almost miraculously recover !!

Well I suppose muscle damage will be the least of thier worries compared to being culled :(

The guy on the fone made it sound so bad that I had even contemplated it :( :(  It scared me really :(

That coupled with the online pharmacy losing my order ..... I thought perhaps that was fate!!

I would assume that there is only one strength of Tylan 200 but could be wrong :(

The 200 bit means 200mg / ml

Each ml contains 200 mg of tylosin base activity.

Have spoken to manufacturer of Tylan 200 and told that under no circumstances should it be used in chickens and turkeys.... it causes muscle damage and death.... it also says not to be used for chickens and turkeys on the box and instructions.....

Yet we both saw in my vets drug book it gives a dose and timings for administration!!!

What is one to think.....

It has arrived and now I am too scared to use it and have no intention now of using it :(

However the Dr that I spoke to did advise me that the eye problem which is the only thing really that is persisting is secondary to the myco and not an indication that they are still actively suffering with it..... so there is some good news anyway.... maybe the soluble stuff has worked after all.... just need to wait to see what happens with the eyes now...

They are just shut (one per few birds) not gunky, bubbly or nasty.... just held shut??
