making a shed smaller
« on: March 08, 2009, 17:48 »
Hi, hoping you can help.  I have no shed at my plot, but might be able to get a free one - bonus- one problem - sheds on plot can be no larger than 6x4 and this free one is around 8ft square - so - how easy would it be for me to reduce its size? would have to do it myself but able to use power tools and love a little construction so what do you think?
What should i be mindful of if i do this?   is it worth it?
just keep breathing................

If its a feather board shed make sure you fix them to a new support bar first or cut where there is already one as they tend to split. Im sure you will have fun cutting it down in Size.
Thanks
Kris

it will be very easy to do just think of what type of roof would you want  ( a traditional pitch roof or sloping back to front ) but the most important thing is think about it 1st then measure twice and cut once ,if i can be of any assistance please feel free to ask
If the early bird gets the worm how come the 2nd mouse to the trap gets the cheese ??

a thought occured to me are you allowed 2 sheds on your plot ie one for tools and one for junk me thinks you could have two sheds for very little extra outlay

Oooh philskin there's a thought - i did also think i could make a chicken house from the leftovers (well a shed sized one)
i built a trolley on wheels once, had a shelf with sides n everyghitng :D, so cutting a shed up doesnt worry me, hubby seems to think it cant be done, whihc makes me want to do it all the more  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

thanks, if i get the shed i am sure you will hear more from me

You could keep the base 8' square and leave a verandah to sit on to drink  your tea. No one will notice the odd 2' extra width.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ah noshed what a lovely idea - and its only the shed that has to be 6x4 - no one said owt about not being able to have a veranda or such like.............. the possibilities are endless i think
now to hope the bloke still has the shed
i have my hammer and am ready to use it (well it technically belongs to oh but he wont mind )

hi Titch

Yes you can do it. I did similar with this. It was over twice the size it is now. Just do lots of thinking and then lots of checking before any cutting and you'll be fine! I drew lots of pics & plans and took lots of measurements which helped get my head round what I had to do.

Good luck!

People grow their vines over their verandahs on our site. Then on Sunday afternoons in the summer they sit and play cards and natter with their mates. Very civilised.

sounds like something my oh would do
update on the shed situation ........
my brother, bless him, has gone and ordered me a shed and paid for it.......... so i guess i wont be doing any re-construction work after all....... also the orignal shed has someone else in line for it so it may not have worked out - shame i was looking forward to proving hubby wrong
all is not lost though - we have an old dog kennel in the back garden and i was sat there with me coffee this morning and i thought - chicken house!!
it will need little modification and is perfect size, we even have batten for the run, just need to get some welmesh for the run, make the inside chickeny and bobs you uncle....... i will construct something for my plot one way or another

thanks for all your ideas and pics and stuff -
