Using 25mm water pipe for raised bed netting
« on: February 27, 2009, 13:26 »
I have access to a large supply of free 25mm blue water pipe.

I saw a project on here using 50mm water pipe and they used scaffolding tube inserts to make a frame for a polytunnel.

Does anyone have a bright idea as to what I can use for my smaller diameter pipe?
Cheese makes everything better.

I make hoops of it to hold up my netting on the brassica patch.

I'm looking for something to insert in them that can be hammered into the soil for extra rigidity and height.

Thanks Aunty.  It looks as if it will span quite a large area too.  Hmmmm, another project springs to mind. ::)

I make large plastic covered cloches and netted cloches using 25 mm pipe about a metre long bent in arch and stuffed into ground plus a few bricks to hold down sheets etc. can use plastic bottles full of sand or water as well.
You coudl also swop excess pipe for anything else you need via this forum

Thanks everyone, I have a good idea of what to do now.  That Geoff Hamilton was a great gardener and his design looks easy to do.

I drill thru the pipe and then screw it to the wood side of the raised bed.

I just shove some bits of bamboo into the ground and put the pipes over them. Then you can drape anything over - fleece - enviromesh - netting. Weighted down with bricks or milk bottles full of water, you are away!
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I do exactly the same as you Noshed, and just tie the netting/polythene like a sweetie wrapper one end, and use a clothes peg the other. it's a nice'n'easy way to remove it for weeding/watering etc.,

I'd just buy some dowel the right size and hammer in lengths of that. Wouldn't last forever but sizes are easy to come by and not too pricey.

I think you're right Trillium.  Not every bed needs netting to be high so although it would rot eventually it won't cost too much.
