Using old climbing frame
« on: October 07, 2013, 13:00 »
Hi I have a childrens climbing frame which they have outgrown. It is made of metal and is a dome shape. Wanted to try and turn it into a polytunnel/greenhouse. Wondered if anyone had done anything similar or had any ideas what to cover it with?
Thanks

best of luck - may need tape between metal and plastic as plastic sticks and then tries to move when hot and rips - polytunnels suppliers call it hot spot tape.

Could use it as runner bean support frame or how about grape vines ...................

Sounds doable.

Is there a full height opening?  If not you'll have to cut one. You can buy polytunnel polythene by the meter eg. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=181229899096&globalID=EBAY-GB .

You can wrap it around or in vertical strips.  The problem with vertical strips is the top will become very multi layered at the top compromising light transmission.  I'd try wrapping it around leaving the ends to make your door.  Stake at the bottom, cable tie to the frame (with top overlapping lower sheets) and 'stitch' some pleats into the top of the dome.

You'll need some hot spot tape too as RichardA noted

Given me some ideas especially knowing about the tape. Would take some bars off side for doorway but metal very strong so should still be strong enough.Dome not really high but I am small so ok! Might stoop a bit!
Would make great brassica cage but wanted to try growing tomatoes really.
Will look into pricing plastic for cover
Been thinking about trying to get hold of some debris netting  but not sure where to start really
Thanks everyone
Jude

I bought mine from Ebay Jude, but if you have any building works near you, once they use the debris netting once, they chuck it away!  or try freecycle?

Thing is, you've got so many ideas now that just one old climbing frame isn't going to be enough!     ;)

Thanks Grannie Annie
Will find building site or ask around. Since had allotment, have already got into the "not wasting anything" frame of mind! Childrens old trampoline has become lots of frames over veg and the cushion around its outside is insulating my brick cold frame (bricks from new fireplace and old shower door on top!)
Feeling bit obssessed about recycling so who knows whats after climbing frame!
