hi folks,
As usual I like to run my poultry problems by you first. I keep game fowl and took the notion that I'd like to put a wyandotte rooster with my game hens, he has been with them now for three days and he appears to have no interest in passing his genes on!
He clucks around showing them tasty morsals, but never gets excited nor even shapes at dropping a wing!
His breeder says he was working and is sound, just about a year old .... what could the problem be?
TIA
Cheers

Perhaps he's just working up to it? Getting to know his harem first before he starts spreading his genes around? :)

I hope you're correct ... I will give him a few more days grace...
Cheers

We recently bought some breeding stock to breed the shaver black hybrids. The 2 boys had been with the girls since they were day olds, but it took them seveal weeks of being here before they got a bit more interested in their girls.
We had 82 eggs in the incy, when I candled at day 7, one was infertile and one looked like it had a very porous shell, but all the others have dark splodges in them, so fingers crossed!
Just give him a fair crack of the whip! ;)

Is this a known cross that produces a particular bird e.g. Meat bird ?

I like the game fowl, they're such hard workers and great birds to watch IMHO ... but I took a notion that I wanted to try for more eggs and just arrived at the gold laced wyandotte to keep the natural camo colouring and hopefully he will pass on the gene to lay more eggs, just an experiment on my part.

my experiance with game birds and " normal chickens" is that the chest gets deeper lets get skinnier and the meat darker.egg production is reduced as from a welsummer x indian game

yea the indian game throw a broad chest in the offspring ... I was hoping that the wyandotte rooster would throw offspring that would lay better than the game on their own ... day four and he is still not working! my plan could be underminded

Even better, he's gone tomorrow! I decided I don't want his traits in my flock, so bye bye Mr Wyandotte

Just out of interest, and experienced poultry breeder had one of my cockerels as a grower, and this spring said he was infertile. I was surprised as this has never happened in my flock. I asked why he thought that, and he said he had never seen him do anything
I suggested he try some of the eggs in the inccy - guess what 100 percent fertile. I reckon its a man/woman thing.
I like my cockerels to be gentlemen, not roughty toughty ones. But as long as they can do the business and keep the girls happy....... :)
All the best

Hi Sue,
I'm happy it worked out for your rooster, mine gets moved from pen to pen each day, he was very quick to learn that it was no problem being handled each morning and would even wait on his perch to be lifted off and presented with a new lady friend for the next 24 hours ... I'm used to the game roosters introducing themselves right away, and any other rooster I've ever had, so sadly this guy has had his chips ...
