How to get rid of ants??
« on: May 29, 2011, 22:53 »
Got an ant infestation in one of my raised beds. Don't want to use any harsh type of chemicals or anything like that. What's a good way of getting rid of them so they don't come back if any?

There used to be a liquid in a tube (nippon?) that attracted them and they were poisoned when they drank it. When they returned to the nest to feed the others, they were oisoned too.

Boiling water is effective.

Vinegar can be used as a barrier to exclude them, they won't cross a surface that has been coated with it.
This is probably more useful around the house than the allotment however.  :(

Red ants like dry soil so give the ground a good soak and disturb the soil with a forking through.

Little blighters!  >:(

Think these are black coloured ants and dont think they're bothered by water as the soil they're in is quite clay whick is holding alot of water.  Boiling water sounds good but havn't got any way of boiling water on the allotment.

Maybe try and borrow a camping stove?

THe ant-killer gel and baitstations (make your own out of a couple of yoghurt pots) are very effective, wiped out the nests near my broad beans quickly earlier this year.... no aphids yet as a result....

We used to get them under our path in the garden.  My dads solution was to pour petrol down the holes and then set fore to it.

Obviously this could be a little risky depending on the location of the ants nest.  I have never tried this myself as would probably end up burning my house down.
