Greenhouse frost protection
« on: April 07, 2008, 20:55 »
Hi All

I seem to remember hearing, many years ago,  that burning a night light in a garage generated enough heat to ensure the car started first time even after a frosty night.  I think I recall that you put the night light on the garage floor and covered it with a clay plant pot.

I was wondering if anyone can remember this tip or had even tried it.  If so could it be used in a greenhouse?

thanks

We did this for our day old chicks and or guinea pigs one really cold winter, can't see why it would'nt work for a greenhouse too, you may want to make a "tent" to put it and your plants as I don't think it would keep a whole greenhouse frost free
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Many thanks richyrich7 and peterjf also. I am so glad that it wasn't my memory failing me again and that someone has used the technique. I shall try a candle and pot and use a max-min thermometer to see what the temperature actually drops to.

Many thanks

You could wire a low wattage bulb in to the pot if you have mains to the greenhouse saves the candle going out
