the reason I have no strawberries this year is the infestation of vine weevil.
 all these in a 3ft x 6ins x 9ins deep planter

Oh you what?  Could they have come with the plants?? What a shame.

dont know doesnt need a lot to get this many beasties invading.
six plants from B & Q last year to get better fruit as mine were an old plant about ten years old. done the three year rotation with them so they were getting ready for renewing.
 so the soil is going to be sterilized and will start again for next year.

Thats a lot of grubs. Sorry for your loss. You say these were in rotation.....were they in open ground? vine weevils are normally worse in containers

 not noticed them until this spring when plants didnt recover after winter.
