I'm determined to have a bumper crop this year as we love em so I started three different types off in the propagator today. My plan is to prick them out into cells when they get to 2" high and then transplant then into good fertile soil towards the middle of May and to keep them well fed on Growmore. Apart from taking out the lower leaves in late summer and praying for a better year weather-wise than 2012, is there anything else I should be doing to get a full crop of large samples? I usually end up with at least half of them just golf-ball size

I have sowed them for the first time this year in individual pots.

I did around 12 and something told me to read the packet so i did, it said sow on surface of compost and dont cover  :blink:

so the ones i covered have stayed covered and i will sow some more just in case

I planted mine yesterday and my Dobie packet said to 'lightly cover with soil' so I did. Interesting that there are different instructions!

Celery and celeriac seeds being so fine are activated by light - a bit like turning the soil over and weed seeds become exposed and germinate.  I lightly sprinkle seed on damp compost and put on a warm sunny windowsill and they usually germinate fairly quickly.

At once, they don't need successive sowings, they sit in the ground for ages.

I plant mine once they've made biggish sturdy plants into a bed where I've put lashings of muck

Think I'll do mine next week once moved the brassicas into the coldframe. Space is a premium in my house and no greenhouse

Now I covered mine with compost - no instruction not to??
Might try a few more and cover with a little vermiculite - that generally works for fussy seeds!
