A 16ft length of pressure treated wood that is one inch by 8 inches is about £8 and unless my maths are out you can get a 4ft x 4ft bed out of that along with a few nails and a couple of bits of 2 inch by 2 inch timbers for corner strength and anchor posts. Total cost of material about £10.

If you wanted stouter timber you could pick up used scaffold boards at any reclamation yard but don't pay too much as new ones are only a tenner down south (Where you are) but they aren't pressure treated.

I am sure any builders merchant will cut the timber for you so just a matter of pre-drilling (Save splitting the timber) and nailing up.

But for all that, this mans beds look well built, the edges are shamfered and that shows they care about what they are doing (Although that could be because the timber is pre used for something else), so not as bad as some out there.

You pays your money and take your choice !

I bought my first one but have since taken up a little bit of skip diving and built my last one in a hour or so for free with old bricks. Always seeing them about, very flexible in terms of size and height, don't bother with cemant or anything (am a girl after all  ) and on the look out for some more after the success of the last one 8)

I made a round brick one last year for my runner bean rig. A moveable feast too. Just shifted it when the beans were cleared and turned it into a barbecue with an old oven shelf  :D
