Lettuce 'Winter density'
« on: August 19, 2009, 15:24 »
I'm thinking of growing Winter Density (thats its name not description) lettuce.  It's a sort of cos lettuce or semi cos.  Am I right in thinking under a cloche, I will get lettuce all winter long OR is it a grow in September and it will be ready to eat in very early spring.

I've read up on ithe seeds but seems conflicting advice: i.e. sow this and you will have lettuce all winter long OR sow this and you will have lettuce ready to pick in May.

Any other cos types for winter, hate butterheads, don't mind icebergs.
Thanks
Sheila

Grew Vaila Winter Gem last year in a growbag previously used for tomatoes, and had crops all winter -- was under glass though (unheated)

I'm hoping Winter Density crops under cloches rather than just sits there: I think you can harvest from January onwards according to the blurb on the packet  :D

Sorry to "hijack" this topic. But, did you use one growbag all winter? And sow lettuce seed, what every six weeks or so? To give a constant supply of plants? I currently have three growbags being used for toms. What do you suggest please?

I chuffed up the growbag soil ( 2 bags) as it was hard and dry, watered it well with a dash of washing up liquid in the water to act as a wetting agent, added a small amount of growmore 'cos I thought they might be a bit starved other wise. Oh, and I cut out the whole of the top so it made a trough with sides, with about an inch overlap only (Hope that makes sense!)

Sowed a very small pinch of seed (probably about 12 seeds) every four weeks, thinning to about 5 ins apart. Transplanted thinnings, which then grew more slowly for a while, at same spacing.

Didn't water them much, maybe a dribble or so once a week

Werked fer me  :D

Thanks very much. An idea has been sown!!! I have the winter lettuce variety Valdor. As soon as my toms have finished, I will be trying-out your method.
