When I was around 15, my grandad had a coop. He had 6 chickens. Their names were Hettie, Lettie, Olga, Sarah, Clara and Cluck. Oh those eggs were so good. I'm 41 now, and living in Japan. Oh, I still want some chickens of my own !
-
Hi and welcome Sean! :D Is chicken keeping a popular pastime in Japan?
-
Thankyou :)
Not sure. I've heard that my mother in law had small ones. They were probably bantams. Will have to ask various demanding questions. She currently has no neighbors, I might see if I can get her back into it !
-
That sounds like a plan! :D
-
and if she and you do get some then please post a photo of them on here - we love to look at photos :)

Konnichi wa - I never saw chickens in my three years out there. I bet the fanciers are fanatical though if the koi carp owners are anything to go by!
Beautiful cockerels with long tails dragging on the ground feature a lot in Japanese art.

12 years here and I heard a squawk. Dunno where from !

Its very rewarding, relaxing, and satisfying having chickens I do miss mine, you get nice tasty fresh eggs, they keep the lawn down (I haven't stoned cutting it since) and the eggs have 1/2 the cholesterol than mass produced ones so you can eat twice as many :D

where did you get that information from Dopey113?
-
Few places on the net, I think its to do with the food they give them
-
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs. The findings showed that free-range chicken eggs produced the following results:
• 1/3 less cholesterol
• 1/4 less saturated fat
• 2/3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta-carotene
Just cut and pasted this, I just googled... free range chicken eggs and cholesterol

That's very interesting if its true. I just wonder what commercially reared birds in America are fed?
-
I dont think its just the USA, but saying that the USA is very tough on things like chemicals in farm animals, but it could be half in the UK read it some place and I think it was the UK that was lower
-
Percy Edwards!
he was funny. Amazed you remembered him !
-
you will also find just as much information disputing this over here in the UK. here (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2031244/Free-range-eggs-nutritious-battery-alternatives-claims-study.html) is one such article.
There was also rumours that Araucana eggs were lower but that again is not true.
Duck eggs do have more cholesterol though.
-
I was told that home produced eggs don't have high cholesterol as they're not fed on waste from the seafood industry as commercial battery ones are

That's interesting. Makes sense as well
-
sorry but in this country they are generally fed on layers mash - exactly the same that we buy whether you buy mash or in it's compressed form as layers pellets and made by the same companies such bocm pauls but rather than buying in sacks the poultry farms buy by the tanker loads. All of these feed companies employ people who work out the correct nutrition formulas.

Oh that's a shame :( Just enjoyed aisian style steamed eggs with sesame oil and soy sauce, plus rice, all drizzled with home-made chilli oil. Was scoffing away thinking 'oh great, I can have this more often' ::) Oh well :)
-
That sounds like a recipe we need to see. :)
-
So easy is not even really a recipe but will post it in the cooking bit ;)
-
Ta. ;)
-
I have that. Raw, mind you, but oh the joy !

Do you mean rice with raw egg and chilli oil Sean? I know raw egg is eaten much more in Japan but not sure I fancy it myself :)
-
Oh yes bowl of rice with a raw egg mixed in, soy sauce and look up 'shichimi' on top.
When I first saw the raw egg on drunk on Rocky I didn't care for it. But now it's a daily breakfast !

They are stunning. I'm aquiring either gold partridge or silver duckwing yokohama breeding pair shortly. Can't wait. :) Their tails can be up to five foot long!!
-
oooh photos when you get them please!

I will do, they will babies though when I get them & it can up to two years for them to mature & gain their stunning looks! I was also looking at the black sumatra too. They are jet black all over, skin, eyes, feathers the lot. There are some truely beautiful chickens out there. Not much cop at laying though! I'd like to get into showing them as they're a rare breed.
