we've had chickens for 3 yrs now and they all have names, all in alphabetical order, all old fashioned names, so far we have or had Aggie, Betty, Cissy, Dot, Ethel, Fanny, Gertie, Hettie, Iris and Joyce (the last 2 named after mam and her best friend)

I like this idea, wish I had thought of it.   :)

We have two orpingtons - 1 Buff - Tilly, 1 Blue, Molly and 4 Cuckoo Marans - Daisy Mae, Matilda, Freckles and Rosie.  I named them after names that sort of suited them.

As some of you probably already know I have 2 chickens called Felicity and Penelope named after Felicity Kendall and Penelope Keith from the Good Life

I wanted to call them Sage and Onion but hubby failed to see the humour in that
When I was young we used to go 'skinny dipping,' now I just 'chunky dunk.'

Oh Felicity and Penelope are excellent names!  A rather obscure TV channel here is playing re-runs of The Good Life and it's bringing back all kinds of memories.

It's no wonder I think a back yard isn't complete until it is covered in chickens and vegetable gardens, after watching a programme like that in my formative years.  :D

I only name the cocks.  There's Sylvester, Nicholas II, Boris, Rasputin, Stanley, Sidney.
It's useful to name each generation with a common theme so for example all teh cocks from one generation (when hatched or otherwise acquired) might have a common first letter so Sidney, Stanley and Sylvester are one generation, the Russian theme is another. When we used to name hens for example one generation had wild flower names.  I tend to avoid the comedy names like Mrs Clucky :tongue2:

ooh, i love a good name thread!

my first chickens were named after the girls in Mambo Number 5.
so we had
Jessica
Erica
Monica

then Monica died, so we got
Sandra
Rita (both ex batts)

Sandra passed away, so we got
Mary
Pamela
Tina

Of all of those hens, the only one left alive is Erica.

The new lot of hens are named after virtues, so we've got
Faith
Hope
Mercy (God's Abundant Mercy, you see -so she would lay loads of eggs!  )

I think if you're going to do a theme, you've got to have lots that you can choose from, so when you get more hens, you've got names for them without having to change theme  :D ::)

For the first three we decided to name one each and then bought four, Doh! Now the flock has increased we've tried to stick to the sharing the naming though with a three and a half year old daughter that doesn't always work.

We now have,  (in order of arrival):

Talulah (Black Cochin), Matilda (Cotswold Legbar), Fluffy (Black Mottled Pekin) and Treetrunk (Cream Legbar).

Saffy (Goldline) and Clara (Nera)

and our new arrivals last week,

Buffy, Esmerelda and Lucretia (Buff, Lavender and Black Pekins).

Rejected names - alligator, raspberry and Jack
