i was using my rotavator and it cut out when i hit a small root, when i went to restart it the pull cord was solid, i took off the casing to check but the cord is fine the actual part that spins on the engine to start is the problem. I noticed on the engine there is a crack and am wondering if the engine has blown. Do you reckon this is the case?

its worth disconnecting the drive  from the digging blades as mine did the same and it was the gearhead on mine that had seized, the engine on its own turned over fine, so its worth disconnecting the two parts to see if the fault is in the engine or gearbox.

Well you can be sure that a crack aint supposed to be there.  It sounds as though your engine has a broken piston rod which has hit the internals.  Things don't sound good.

thanks, might aswell have a take it apart to have a look  sounds like it has blown into a millions bits inside it
