what's eating my root veg
« on: October 28, 2009, 21:25 »
My very best large carrots have been attacked,   something has taken off a 'collar' on anything those that were visible above ground.   Then I tried the Swede and the few of those which had actually got to any good size had lost about 1/3 taken out of them.     So whatever this is is picking out just the best of teh crop, and not little nibbles.    Looks like lots of small scrapes,    whatever it is can reach up 2 inches.  My thoughts are birds or mice?
The tops aren't touched or pushed/trampled over.  - so what's eating my root veg
My plot has chicken wire all round so not rabbits plus I have used the little blue (organic) pellets for slugs
Any ideas any-one?
trying to be green except when blue

Sounds like cutworms. White things with orange heads. Nasty.

I've had mice eating mine.  You can see the tiny teeth marks  >:(

I would bet on Woodmouse, also called Long Tailed Fieldmouse.

thanks - my bet is mice - they are very tiny teeth, my doubt is because there are little single scapes - ie not like double front teeth.  I'd even wondered if the pheasants were to blame but there's no trampling

Tiny teeth marks isn`t a sure sign of mice as a good size slug will leave similar marks with its radula , have a look at http://snailstales.blogspot.com/2009/01/slug-tree-fell-in-woods-did-it-make.html

Pheasants would tend to peck holes rather than make scrapes so i think they are off the suspect list.
