Dead chickens
« on: October 29, 2009, 20:42 »
This is a question that is bothering me and I'd like some advice in case this happens and I'm not prepared - what do you do with the body of a dead chicken? It will be quite difficult and I don't know if there are by laws and things to take into account.

This is a tricky one, and I would also welcome any advice from more experienced people!

One thing I would say is that before you get any chickens you must be prepared to be able to put a poorly hen out of her suffering, or know someone who will should the need arise.  There is lots of advice on here with exact methods.  Although they are often pets, many urban vets don't deal with chickens so please be prepared for this...

It's a question that's crossed my mind and heaven forbid that anything happens to our girlies but I suppose we need to be prepared. My son has shed blood sweat and tears burying deceased budgies so I would dread to think about laying a chicken to rest but what else can we do?

Officially you may not bury them in your garden  ::)

That is because they are food animals and theoretically they could contaminate the ground water  ::)

BUT as they are food animals wasted food can be put into the refuse you can bad them and put them into the general household waste  ::)

Thank goodness Auntie - that's what I did with mine (with as much ceremony as was possible) but was unsure that this was the right thing to do, hence didn't want to advise others (!)  Many thanks
