A while ago I started a thread http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=99595.0 about how our hens dislike worms. Things have changed, they now have a taste for the damn things.

After giving a patch a routine dig and like a fool I gave every worm I found to the hens it suddenly dawned on me that the worms do a good job of keeping the soil fresh and I've just removed them all.

How should I encourage the worms to breed or will things take care of themselves?

If you could give the ground a good winter mulch and leave it til the spring you'll have some very happy worms, if you can keep the chickens off of it
