Pallets - Shy bairns get nowt!
« on: October 21, 2008, 16:07 »
As part of my job, I deal with a lot of plumbing/electrical suppliers, and just out of curiosity, this afternoon, I asked three of my contacts what they did with their pallets that arrive with their deliveries.
I was told that they were simply taken away and discarded at the local tip, or sometimes their suppliers took them back........... No more they dont...  :D
I managed to get seven of them in the back of my Picasso, all brand new wood too.
They have all agreed to give me a ring when they collect so many, so I can nip out on my lunch break and pick them up and seeing how I pass my lottie on the way home every night I can easily drop them off.. I mean... what a bargain... I love free stuff me  :D
I have plans for a hen hut and a new fence and also for a few raised beds, so this is just what I need.
My mum always used to say (GRHS) "shy bairns get nowt"... how right she was.  :D

Just visit your local shops, B&Q, Homebase, any DIY shops really, they all get stock delivered on pallets, and to be honest, they can only say no?

Its amazing the things you start to notice once you have an allotment.  I have found 4 tyres at the sides of the road and about 6 pallets.  This doesn't count all the pallets I have driven past!

I can't believe there are no skips in Merseyside. They are the allotment holder's dream.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Most companies will be pleased to have someone turn up regularly to clear out their old pallets. Some are returnable, or saleable though, so look for untidy stacks with irregular shapes are these are less likely to have any value.

ring your local black paving companies, they are usually more than happy to ahve you take pallets though they tend to be the smaller ones rather than the huge industrial ones, but they make excellent fences! (And compost bins).
