Solanaceae,Tomato/pepper
« on: September 04, 2013, 15:31 »
Talking to my plot neighbour about the ripening of my sweet peppers requiring at least another monthwhen we will probably be getting damper cooler weather. I know toms and peppers are related , but do peppers get blight? My neighbour had never come across it and I have not read anything about it. Anyone to enlighten me?

Yes, they are related (also to potatoes and aubergines, in fact anything in the Nightshade family can get blight.)

The blight that affects peppers is a different species of the fungus from that which affects tomatoes, but the effect is the same.

Because it's a different species (of Phytopthora) pepper blight is presumably less common in this country than potato and tomato blight because the crop is not grown anything like as widely.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
