Storing onions
« on: July 17, 2007, 09:51 »
I'm sure there must be a thread about this somewhere but can't see one!

So I have a lovely lot of onions and know I'm supposed to dry them and hang them in a cool dark place....................er am I right so far?

Anyway, was hoping that I could dry them outside in the sun (oi, stop laughing) but of course the rain just won't stop.
Where shall I dry them then?

Thanks
Zeb

I always dry my onions on the benches in the greenhouse. I wonder if all this rain will affect the keeping quality?

I've done this too - it's the only warm dry place I have at the mo - the kitchen is too full of blooming washing!

Some of my spring sown onions are pathetically small - was thinking of pickling them, but do I still need to cure them first?

Pickling onions are salted to draw out the water. This stops the vinegar, which is the preservative,  being watered down.

Thanks for the replies.
I've decided to dry them in the kitchen as I'm on my own this week and there's no one to complain!

I've got the washing hung around the other rooms!
Ah, summer eh?
