Eucalyptus roots
« on: December 04, 2013, 19:16 »
HI all merry Christmas one and all
.My daughter has moved into a new house and at the bottom of the garden  is the stump of a  Eucalyptus tree 16 inches diam and suckers have began to sprout some are 3-6 ft she wants to get rid of it,I have suggested cutting off the sprouting branches and drill holes in the exposed roots  and fill with root killer then dig out, has any one any better ideas please as  I have no experience with trees .Cheers ;)

The fresh growth of eucalyptus can be beautiful, but if she really does want to get rid of then stump killer will make it die.

She will still be left with a stump, albeit a dead one, so she will need to consider if this is going to be some sort of feature, or if she is going to have it removed

It may not be is bad a job as you fear. Eucalyptus are known for having very shallow roots. I lost mine. I don't think it was happy about my pruning. It was a beautiful little tree.    :)

Suggest to her pruning some of the suckers off over the Festive period to use as Garlands, wreath,in a vase. then when she sees how lovely they are & how expensive at a florists you may be saved a job. Makes a lovely bush if kept pruned as the new leaves are very pretty as Sunny says.
A woman's place is in her garden.
