Morning all, how we doing?
Does anyone know of a variety of Eucalyptus tree that will grow in out somewhat strange climate? Any help will be smashing

Hi there. I've been experimenting with Eucalyptus varieties for a few years now (am a tree warden in my spare time and a huge tree enthusiast lol). Eucalyptus gunii is the bog standard variety that has been grown in the UK for many years and is widely available. However, in recent years about 20 other species have been successfully introduced and some grow very fast and very big! What qualities are u looking for in a Eucalypt as I could suggest a few suitable varieties and where to buy them, if you like?

Well that would be perfect! I'm looking to grow a good amount. I'm looking to make cosmetics for my wife amongst other things and a whole lot of leaves are needed for those? While I'm here....what are the chances of growing witch hazel in the uk too?

Ok so I guess you don't want the Eucalyptus growing into a big tree? Eucalyptus gunnii (cider gum) is a good choice as it can be easily coppiced and kept as a bush. In this way it produces loads of leaves and quickly regrows when cut.

As for witch hazel there are quite a few varieties that grow well here as ornamental shrubs. Are they the same as the witch hazel used for cosmetics?

As fresh leaves give the best return for oil, I am sure you will be keeping them well trimmed 

Almond oil makes the best carrier, better than olive oil imho
